Early Origins of the Woodhed family

The surname Woodhed was first found in West Yorkshire likely at Burley Woodhead, a hamlet now in the City of Bradford. Little is known of the origin of the hamlet other than it probably dates back to about c. 1200 when it was listed as Burcheleia. 1 Today the village Burley in Wharfedale is adjoined by Burley Woodhead. As far as the surname, the first reference was in the year 1316 when Christina Wodhead held estates in that shire. 2 Later, Rogeros de Wodehed was recorded in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379. 3
