Origins Available: Austrian, German

The Wiser surname is generally thought to be derived from the word "wische" or "wiese" both of which mean "meadow." Thus the earliest uses of the name may have been to describe someone "from the meadow." There have also been place names derived from this word, and there are no doubt instances where the surname derives from one of the place names.

Wiser Early Origins

The surname Wiser was first found in Westphalia, where the name Wiser became noted for its many branches in the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region.
