Wiggenton Early Origins

The surname Wiggenton was first found in Yorkshire where the family name was first referenced in the year 1170 when Akeman de Wigenton was granted lands at that time. Wigton in Cumberland was home to another branch of the family established in ancient times. "Of the early history of this place little is recorded: the barony was given by William de Meschines to Waldeof, Lord of Allerdale, and by him to Odoard, who lived about the period of the Norman Conquest, and assumed the name De Wigton."
