Etymology of Wibbeler

What does the name Wibbeler mean?

The surname Wibbeler may have originated with a nickname which was descriptive of some personal or physical characteristic of the initial bearer. In this case, the name would be derived from the Middle High German word "wibel" the name of a much feared, grain attacking worm. In time the term began to be used figuratively for a restless and stressful person. Alternatively, the name may also be of patronymic origin, derived from the first name of the father of the initial bearer. In this instance, the name would indicate the "son of Wible," a pet form of the ancient personal name Wibelt, a variant of Wigbald. The personal name Wigbald is derived from the Old High German word "wigan" meaning "battle, warrior" and "bald" meaning "bold, audacious."

Early Origins of the Wibbeler family
