Early Origins of the Whaddon family

The surname Whaddon was first found in Buckinghamshire at Whaddon, a parish, in the union of Winslow, hundred of Cottesloe. " A small priory of Benedictine monks, in honour of St. Leonard, was founded in this parish, at Snelleshall, prior to the time of Henry III., by Ralph Martel." 1

The place dates back to Saxon times when it was first listed as Hwaetaedun (966-975.) By the time of the Domesday Book of 1086, the place name was known as Wadone. Whaddon is also located in Cambridgeshire and Wiltshire, near Salisbury. All places share the same meaning: "hill where wheat is grown." 2

The earliest record of the family was in 1182, when William of Whadden held estates in Buckinghamshire. 3
