What does the name Trichi mean?

The Italian surname Trichi is most likely derived from a place name. There is a Tricino, located three kilometers east of Pompeii. There is also a Tricarico city located in Southern Italy near Matera in the region of Basilicata. The earliest records of this city refer to it as Tricarium. The etymology of this place name is uncertain, but, it may be derived from "tricarico" meaning "three cargos." As surnames began to be used in Italy in the 15th century, it was fairly common for someone to be referred to by their place of origin.
