The surname Tilt was first found in Leicestershire where it first appeared around the middle of the 12th century. The suffix "-ton," meaning town, indicates that the name Tilt is local in its origin, meaning "Farmstead or village of a man called Tila." Tila is a personal name from Old English. Tilt is a Saxon word meaning "tent."

Tilton is a parish, in the union of Billesdon, partly in the hundred of Gartree, but chiefly in that of East Goscote. 1 The place name dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was listed as Tiletone. 2

However, one of the first records of the surname was John de Tylton who was listed in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273 as residing in Lincolnshire. 3
