The ancestors of the Tateshall family brought their name to England in the wave of migration after the Norman Conquest of 1066. They lived in Lincolnshire, in the parish of Tattersall (Tattershall.) The fortress stood on a moor, and was surrounded by two fosses, which received the waters of the Bain; the principal part was demolished during the parliamentary war.
