Etymology of Tagliaferri

What does the name Tagliaferri mean?

The Italian surname Tagliaferri is a "nome doppio", or compound surname composed of the elements "taglia" from the verb "tagliare", meaning "to cut", and the term "ferro", meaning "iron". Evidently the occupation of the progenitor was "to cut the iron". Whoever was involved in the workmanship of iron, especially those who were manufacturing arms, such as swords and daggers, would achieve a great standing in the community.

However, the surname Tagliaferri could be also of nickname origin given to a soldier, endowed with a great strength and capable of cutting or cleaving with a single stroke of his sword, the armor of an enemy. In the eleventh century, at the time of the "Romance of Chivalry", the similar surname "Taillefer", was also widespread in France.
