Poland Etymology of SzatkowskiWhat does the name Szatkowski mean? The distinguished Polish name Szatkowski is a locational or toponymic surname denoting a person for Szadek, Szadki or Szadkowice, Poland. Another source claims the name is an occupational name; one of those names based on the type of work a man once did or the profession he pursued. In this instance, the name is derived from the Old Polish verb 'szatkowac' which means, literally, 'to slice or shred vegetables'. By extension, therefore, the noun 'szatkownica' came to denote 'a vegetable-shredder' or 'cabbage-slicer'. As with many Polish surnames, the spelling with a trailing "a" denotes the feminine version of the same name as the name with a trailing "i". Early Origins of the Szatkowski familyThe surname Szatkowski was first found in Szadek, in west-central Poland. Today, there are three villages so-named in the same area of Poland. Szadki is a village in the district of Gmina Serock, within Legionowo County, Masovian Voivodeship, in east-central Poland and Szadkowice is a village in the district of Gmina Slawno, within Opoczno County, Lódz Voivodeship, in central Poland.
