Etymology of Szadkowski

What does the name Szadkowski mean?

The distinguished Polish name Szadkowski is a locational or toponymic surname denoting a person for Szadek, Szadki or Szadkowice, Poland.

Another source claims the name is an occupational name; one of those names based on the type of work a man once did or the profession he pursued. In this instance, the name is derived from the Old Polish verb 'szatkowac' which means, literally, 'to slice or shred vegetables'. By extension, therefore, the noun 'szatkownica' came to denote 'a vegetable-shredder' or 'cabbage-slicer'.

As with many Polish surnames, the spelling with a trailing "a" denotes the feminine version of the same name as the name with a trailing "i".
