Early Origins of the Suffield family
The surname Suffield was first found in Norfolk
where conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant
of the lands of Baron
Suffield who was recorded in the Domesday Book
census of 1086.
One of the first of the family on record was Walter Suffield (died 1257), an English cleric, Bishop of Norwich (1244-1257.) Apparently, he was an eloquent preacher, and showed generosity to the poor. In 1249, he founded St. Giles's Hospital in Norwich to provide care for the poor which is still in use today.
