One of the first of the family on record was Walter Suffield, Suffeld or Suthfeld (died 1257), an English cleric, Bishop of Norwich (1244-1257.) Apparently, he was an eloquent preacher, and showed generosity to the poor. In 1249, he founded St. Giles's Hospital in Norwich to provide care for the poor which is still in use today.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Henry Suffield, who was recorded in Toronto in the Ontario census of 1871; as well as Robert Suffield, who came to Colorado in 1888.
