The surname Spinola was first found in Espinal, Navarre, in the Auñamendi region of northern Spain. One of the earliest records of the surname is that of one Lucano de Spinola, who established a branch of the family in Portugal. Arms were granted to the above by King Manuel of Portugal in 1513. Notable bearers of this name or a variant include the Venezuelan writer Valentin Espinal who contributed to the development of the newspaper industry in his country during the early part of the nineteenth century.
