Early Origins of the Smallshaw family

The surname Smallshaw was first found in Yorkshire, where the name appeared in the late 13th century. The name Smallshaw, like many surnames, was probably derived from a topograhpical feature of the family's dwelling place. The name was probably derived from "small" plus the Old English word "sceaga," meaning a group of trees. In this case, it is likely the family lived near either a small group of trees, or perhaps a group of small trees. Another, somewhat less likely possibility is that the second part of the name comes not from "sceaga," but from "sceo," meaning "shoe." In that case, the name would be most likely a nickname that got converted into a surname; perhaps the first bearer of the name had small feet, which inspired the name.
