The Schwerdtner surname is derived from the German word "schwerdt," meaning "sword." It is thought that some of the surnames that include this root word were occupational for sword makers. There was also a place named Schwerta, East of Görlitz, Saxony, near the Polish border.

Schwerdtner Early Origins

The surname Schwerdtner was first found in Saxony, although the surname may have arisen simultaneously in various parts of the Holy Roman Empire. Some of the earliest recorded instances of the name include Johannes dictus Swertfeger, residing in Hamburg as early as 1266, and Heinrich dictus Swertfeger, who was living in Weilderstat in 1275.
