Early Origins of the Sapot family

The surname Sapot was first found in Huntingdonshire at Elton, where the family held lands for many years. By the 15th century, Sir Richard Sapcote (d. 1477) of Elton Hall, had built this illustrious hall which survives today.

One source claims the name was derived from the term "sheep-cote" 1 where a cote is a "shed or coop for small domestic animals," in this case "sheep."

Migration of the Sapot family

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Sapots to arrive in North America: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands..
