England Early Origins of the Sapcot familyThe surname Sapcot was first found in Huntingdonshire at Elton, where the family held lands for many years. By the 15th century, Sir Richard Sapcote (d. 1477) of Elton Hall, had built this illustrious hall which survives today. One source claims the name was derived from the term "sheep-cote" 1 where a cote is a "shed or coop for small domestic animals," in this case "sheep." Migration of the Sapcot familyIn an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Sapcots to arrive on North American shores: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands..
