The surname Saltana comes from the place name Saldaña, a town and municipality in the province of Palencia in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain.

Early Origins of the Saltana family

The surname Saltana was first found in the former Kingdom of Leon, as well as in old Castile. The Saltana family are believed to have descended from Bernardo del Carpio and also Sancho Dias de Saldaña, who was lord of the town of Saldaña and who lived in 870 A.D. A descendant of his, Diego Lopes de Saldaña, son of Fernando Lopes de Saldaña, who was lord of Miranda and Castanar in Castille, was ambassador to Rome for King Henrique IV, King of Castille and Leon (1454-1474). He moved to Portugal, and established a family of that name there. Another branch of the family moved to Andalucia.
