In Spain, hereditary surnames were adopted according to fairly general rules and during the late Middle Ages, names that were derived from localities became increasingly widespread. The original bearer of the name Quintano, which is a local surname, once lived, held land, or was born in the beautiful region of Spain. The name was originally borne by a person who lived on a shared piece of land and was obliged to pay one-fifth of the land's produce as rent which is derived from the Spanish word quintana, and the Latin word quintus, which means a fifth.
