What does the name Prohaska mean?

The Czech and Bohemian surname Prohaska is derived from the Czech word procházet which means "to walk or wander," an occupational name for a tradesman or travelling butcher. The feminine variant is Procházková. This surname is also found in Slovakia.

In English, the name literally means "a stroll or walk" and is sometimes equated to the surname Walker.

Early Origins of the Prohaska family

The surname Prohaska was first found in Bohemia where Anton Prochazka, was raised to the Austrian nobility in 1792 as Secretary of the Royal Bohemian Land Rights. His son, Joseph Edler ver Prochazka, Imperial and Royal Gubernial (Gubernialrath) Councillor and District Captain of Klattau, was elevated to the hereditary Austrian knighthood in 1818 as a Knight of the Imperial Austrian Order of Leopold, in accordance with the statutes of this order; at the same time, he received the Incolat in the knighthood of the Kingdom of Bohemia. Knight Josef Prochazka received the hereditary Austrian knighthood in 1836 as Imperial and Royal Privy Councillor, Gubernial Vice President and Chief Land Clerk in the Kingdom of Bohemia, as well as Commander of the Imperial Austrian Order of Leopold, in accordance with the statutes of the order.
