Early Origins of the Prochnow family

The surname Prochnow was first found in Lublin, the capital town of the province of Lublin, Poland. The main cities are those of Siedlce, Chelm and Lublin. The latter, Lublin, has an old citadel, several palaces of Polish nobles and many interesting churches. Its history dates back to the 10th century. Later it was frequently destroyed by Tatars and Cossacks in the 13th and 14th centuries. The surname became noted for its many branches in the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. In their later history the name became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family.
