The surname Posgate was first found in the North Riding of Yorkshire at Postgate. One of the first records of the name was Thomas Postgate who was listed in Whitby (near Postgate) in 1349. Richard Poskett was listed in the area in 1514 and later William Postgate and Thomas Poskitt were both listed in the Yorkshire Wills of 1648. 1 Nicholas Postgate (c.1596-1679), the English Catholic martyr was born at Kirkdale House in the parish of Egton, near Whitby.
