Poolsted Early Origins

The surname Poolsted was first found in Surrey at Polstead, a Saxon small village and civil parish that dates back to c. 975 when it was listed as Polstede. By the Domesday Book of 1086, the place name had evolved into Polesteda [1]CITATION[CLOSE]
Williams, Dr Ann. And G.H. Martin, Eds., Domesday Book A Complete Translation. London: Penguin, 1992. Print. (ISBN 0-141-00523-8)
and literally meant "place by a pool," having derived from the Old English "pol" + "stede." [2]CITATION[CLOSE]

To this day, there are still two large ponds in the village. The church located at the bottom of Polstead Hill, close to Polstead Pond, dates from the 12th century and contains what many believe are the earliest bricks made in England. Polstead Heath is a hamlet nearby.
