Early Origins of the Poineng family

The surname Poineng was first found in Sussex at Poynings, a parish, in the union of Steyning, hundred of Poynings, rape of Lewes. "A brook which rises at the bottom of the Dyke, supplied the Barons Poynings, in whom the manor was vested from a period soon after the Conquest, with several fish-ponds, one of which, since transferred to the rectory in exchange, covers about two acres. The surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Poyning, held by a vassal of the Earl of Warren, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. The Pynings were from the Pays de Caux between the forest of Eawy and the Siene which was the caput of the Warrens.
