Early Origins of the Perlthorp family

The surname Perlthorp was first found in Nottinghamshire at Perlethorpe, 1 a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Perlethorpe cum Budby, in the Newark and Sherwood district. This village name has gone through a variety of spellings including Pailthorpe, 2 Palethorpe, 3 Pallathorp, 4 but all agree the village dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086, where the surname is generally considered to be descended from the tenant of the village and lands of Perlethorpe, held by Richard from Roger de Bully, a Norman noble. 5 To confuse matters more, the Pallathorp spelling is also a location name in Yorkshire. 4

Migration of the Perlthorp family

To escape the political and religious chaos of this era, thousands of English families began to migrate to the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. The passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe; however, those who made the voyage safely were encountered opportunities that were not available to them in their homeland. Many of the families that reached the New World at this time went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations of the United States and Canada. Research into various historical records has revealed some of first members of the Perlthorp family to immigrate North America: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands..
