The Spanish name is derived from the Spanish term palomares which literally means dovecoates, a free-standing structure intended to house pigeons or doves. Both birds were an important food source historically in the Middle East and Europe. The following villages are found in Spain: Palomares, Almería; Palomares del Río, Seville; Palomares del Campo, Cuenca; and Palomares de Béjar, Salamanca.
