Early Origins of the Palethorp family

The surname Palethorp was first found in Nottinghamshire at Perlethorpe, 1 a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Perlethorpe cum Budby, in the Newark and Sherwood district. This village name has gone through a variety of spellings including Pailthorpe, 2 Palethorpe, 3 Pallathorp, 4 but all agree the village dates back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086, where the surname is generally considered to be descended from the tenant of the village and lands of Perlethorpe, held by Richard from Roger de Bully, a Norman noble. 5 To confuse matters more, the Pallathorp spelling is also a location name in Yorkshire. 4
