Etymology of Morisset

What does the name Morisset mean?

The majestic country of France is the ancestral homeland of the distinguished surname Morisset. The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in France were the patronymic surnames, which are derived from the father's given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother's given name. The patronyms were derived from a variety of given names that were of many different origins. The name Morisset was originally derived from the early Christian given name Mauritius, which itself comes from the Phoenician word mauharim, meaning eastern.

Alternatively, the name could be a nickname derived from the Old French word 'moris' which would be a nickname for one with a swarthy complexion and dark hair.

And finally, the French surname Morisset could be the feminine form of Morrisset, a diminutive or the family name Morisse (or Morise). This, in turn, is a variant of Maurice, a popular fontal, and family, name in medieval times. The name is patronymic in origin, belonging, as it does, to that category of names derived from the first name of a father or ancestor. Morisset, in this case, simply denotes "the son of Maurice". The name owes its origin to the 3rd-century saint of the name Mauritius (from the Greek word meaning "dark"). He was the leader of Rome's Thebian Legion and was martyred at the uprising against Rome in Gaul in the year 286 A.D.

Early Origins of the Morisset family
