What does the name Llerenas mean?

The origins of the Llerenas surname are unclear; it is thought that perhaps the word "llerena" comes from "llera," in turn from the Latin "glarea," or "gravel," describing a rocky land. The Llerenas surname may also derives from the place-name Llerena, which is located in the province of Badajoz, in the region of Extremadura (southern Spain, bordering Portugal), though others suppose that the place was named after the family. The place-name Llerena is said to derive from the word "erena" which means "laurel tree."

The surname Llerenas was first found in Veldorado, in the province of Burgos, in Old Castile. Other sources have it that the origin of Lerena is Moorish: Arab parchments by Asi Ben Azar tell of Al Manzor, "the hammer of Christians" and of Ibrahim Lerena Azar, a warrior that fought by his side in the conquest of Spain. The Moorish family Lerena was said to be established in Aragon and La Rioja.
