Hungary Etymology of LaszloWhat does the name Laszlo mean? The name Laszlo is a ancient Hungarian male given name and surname derived from the King-Knight Saint Ladislaus I of Hungary (1077-1095). The name derives from Ladislav, a variant of Vladislav. The name has a history of being frequently Anglicized as Leslie. Today, the name is the most common male name. The Hungarian surname Laszlo is patronymic in origin, being one of those surnames derived from the first name of a father. In this instance the surname Laszlo is derived from the personal name Ladislaus ("glorious lord"). The surname Laszlo, thus, simply means "son of Ladislaus". St. Ladislas is a great figure in Hungarian history. He succeeded to the throne in 1077 and had to put down rebellions, drive the Tartars back to Russia, and fight the Serbs and Bulgars. He acted always in the best interests of his people. A huge man, he was very popular with the soldiers he led into battle. He was a man of great wisdom, and when it came time for the West to choose a leader for the First Crusade, the French, English, and Spanish unanimously selected Ladislas. He accepted but died in 1095 before he could take the expedition to the Holy Land. Laszlo Spelling VariationsItalian surnames come in far more variations than the names of most other nationalities. Regional traditions and dialects are a decisive factor in this characteristic. For example, northern names tend to end in "o", while southern in "i". Also important, but not unique to Italy, was the fact that before dictionaries and the printing press most scribes simply spelled words according to their sounds. The predictable result was an enormous number of spelling variations. The recorded spellings of Laszlo include László, Laszlo, Lassla, and Lasslin and others.
