Etymology of Laidly

What does the name Laidly mean?

In the annals of Scottish history, few names go farther back than Laidly, whose ancestors go back to the people of the Boernician tribe. The first family to use the name Laidly lived in Selkirk (now part of the region of Borders). "This place, which is of considerable antiquity, derives its name, in the Celtic tongue signifying 'the Church in the forest,' from the ancient state of the surrounding district, which was thickly covered with wood and appropriated as a royal chase." 1

They moved there from Laidlawstiel in Galashiels; however, it seems likely that Laidlawstiel was named after the family, not vice versa.

Early Origins of the Laidly family

The surname Laidly was first found in Selkirk, where they held a family seat from very ancient times.

Migration of the Laidly family

When these Boernician-Scottish settlers arrived in North America they brought little with them and often had restart their lives from scratch. Through time, much of their heritage was lost, and it is only this century through Clan societies and highland games that many have recovered their national heritage. Research into various historical records has revealed some of first members of the Laidly family to immigrate North America: David Laidlaw, an "emigrant in bondage," who arrived in America in 1750; Douglas Laidlaw, who arrived in Canda in 1790; James Laidlay, a Scotch-Irish immigrant to New England in 1718.
