Kotur History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Early Origins of the Kotur family

The surname Kotur was first found in Swabia, where the name became noted for its many branches with the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied by the princes of the region. In its later history the name became a power unto itself; bearers were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into this most influential family. The name most likely comes from the German word "kottler," meaning "keeper of a granary or silo." Many surnames were taken from the profession of their first bearers; so it is entirely possible that the first person to bear the surname Kotur was such a person.
