The surname Jedburg was first found in Roxburghshire where the name is derived from the town of that name situated on the Jed Water, in that shire from early times. Jedworth was the ancient name of this town, however it was also known as Jethart. Hence, " Jetharts here," the ancient battle cry of the brawny townsfolk, and men of that name. "Jethart Justice" was a form of lynch law which hanged a man, and tried him afterwards. The name appears on early land records from at least the 12th century, and may well have originated with the Augustinian Abbey founded by King David I about 1138. During the first two hundred years the town was fired and destroyed seven times, and each time rebuilt.
