The distinguished and ancient German surname Illir is derived from the name of the Iller River, which rises among the Allgäuer Alps and flows through Bavaria and along the border of Baden Württemburg into the Danube River.

Illir Early Origins



The surname Illir was first found in settlements along the Iller River, from whose name the surname is derived. The first known bearer of the name was Hainr uf der Ilre, who was a citizen of Kempten in 1333. The young Illir family played a major role in the early history of the region, and contributed greatly to the development of medieval Bavarian society.
