Etymology of Herz

What does the name Herz mean?

Although the name Herz is an English name that refers to a "deer" or "hart" and Hartman is a German name meaning "strong man," a large number of Jewish people adopted this name as a kinnui. That is a common secular name that would be more readily acceptable to authorities. The name Harz or Herz was used to replace the Jewish patronymic name Naphtali. Patronymics are derived from the name of the father or an older paternal relative of the male head of the family.
