The surname Hatte was first found in Aberdeenshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain), a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of northeastern Scotland.

"Andrew Hatmalin, Thomas Hatmalin, and Duncan Hatmalin are recorded in Aberdeen in 1493. The index gives the name as 'Hatmaker, for Thomas but makes no mention of Andrew and Duncan. William Hatt in Brounhill, 1633, and Alexander Hatt, a trade burgess in Aberdeen in 1670, is perhaps Alexander Hatt, maltman there in 1697. Alexander Hatt was a fanner at Haughton of Bieldside, Banchory-Devenick, 1846. Harrison says from a trade name. Perhaps Hatmalin is an error of transcription. compare Hatmaker." 1
