Goebbels History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The Goebbels family originated in Bavaria, Germany. As hereditary surnames were adopted in that area beginning in the 12th century, people were often identified by the kind of work they did. Goebbels is an occupational name for a maker or dealer of "goblets" or "tankards." Further research revealed that the name is derived from the German noun "gobel," which means "drinking vessel."

Migration of the Goebbels family to the New World and Oceana

Thousands of German settlers came to North America between the mid-17th and mid-20th centuries. The hardships of the long voyage were balanced by the opportunity to escape poverty and religious persecution. The descendents of these settlers still populate the states of Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many also live in Ontario and the prairie provinces of Canada. An inquiry into the early roots of North American families has revealed a number of immigrants bearing the name Goebbels or a variant listed above: Conrath Gobel, who came to Philadelphia in 1738.
