Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Jean Gelinas, originally from Pons in Charente-Maritime, who settled in Cap-de-la-Madeleine, in Quebec, where he married Françoise de Charmesnil. Étienne Gelinas, originally of Saintonge in Poitou was a valorous pioneer, who settled in Quebec, where he married for a second time. With Marie Beauregard, he had two sons, Jean-Baptiste and Louis. Pierre Gélinas married Geneviève Carbonneau in Yamachiche in 1731. P. Gelinet, aged 33.
