The distinguished surname Gabrieli can be traced back to the ancient and beautiful town of Gubbio in the Umbria region of Italy. It is generally thought that the family trace their lineage to Forte Gabrielli, a hermit in the mountains around Gubbio.

Early Origins of the Gabrieli family

The surname Gabrieli was first found in Gubbio, Umbria where Saint Rodolfo Gabrielli was born in 1034. In 1051, he bequeathed his castle at Camporeggiano to Saint Peter Damian and became a Benedictine monk. He was appointed bishop of Gubbio in 1061 and died in 1064. Girolamo Gabrielli was the leader of 100 knights during the First Crusade.
