Early Origins of the Framingham family

The surname Framingham was first found in Kent at Farningham, a parish, in the union of Dartford, hundred of Axton, Dartford, and Wilmington, lathe of Sutton-atHone. "This parish, anciently called Fremingham, signifying 'the village by the brook,' is situated upon the road from London to Maidstone, and on the river Darent." 1

Conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Farningham, Ansgot a Norman noble who held his lands from the Archbishop of Canterbury who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. 2

Migration of the Framingham family

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that plagued their homeland made the frontiers of the New World an attractive prospect. Thousands migrated, aboard cramped disease-ridden ships. They arrived sick, poor, and hungry, but were welcomed in many cases with far greater opportunity than at home in England. Many of these hardy settlers went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Among early immigrants bearing the name Framingham or a variant listed above were: William D. Fremlin, who arrived in Ontario in 1871; and William Framlingham, who settled in Ontario in 1871.
