The illustrious name Figueiredo derived its name from a "figueiredo" or "fig tree" and the legendary liberation of maidens which took place by a determined knight who having broken his weapons, used a fig tree branch, in battle.

The name Figueiredo traces its ancestry to Goesto Ansures, a legendary knight who freed some maidens who were held by the Moors to pay the annual tribute of one hundred noble maidens destined to be concubines of the King of Cordova, according to the agreement made with King Mauregato.

One day, he and a few of his pages passed by some Moors who had collected his love D. Mecia and others to be sent to the King. The Moors were ready for battle but Goesto Ansures and his pages ensued. The brave paladin, however, did not lose his courage; love and despair work wonders, he runs to a fig tree, rips off a trunk, wields it like a sword, repeats the blows without ceasing against the Moors, and in a short time completes the victory, lying in the calm of corpses. He takes one of the Moorish horses for himself, and leaves with the maidens, now free from that captivity, taking D. Mecia with him. Arriving at his castle, he offers them shelter until they are handed over to their families.

Soeiro Martins de Figueiredo is the first of the surname, he lived during the reigns of D. Afonso II, D. Sancho and D. Afonso III, and in 1260 he donated certain farms to the monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra for birthdays. The parentage of this Soeiro Martins is not certain, nor is that of Estêvão Soares de Figueiredo, who is mentioned as his son, nor that of Vasco Esteves de Figueiredo, mentioned as his grandson. This Vasco Esteves was lord of the Tower and judged by Figueiredo, and he is mentioned in the Inquiries of D. Dinis. It is conjectured that they were his sons Gil, Lourenço, Afonso and Garcia Vasques de Figueiredo, but of the last two it seems that the generation was long, as theirs either soon became extinct or it is unknown which one it was. 1
