What does the name Fichtl mean?

The German state of Bavaria is the ancestral home of the Fichtl family. Fichtl is a local name. Fichtl is a name for someone who lived in the medieval township named Fichten. This township was located near the Fichtel mountains in the south-east of Germany. Although the original bearer of this name was born in Fichten, this family migrated to Franconia and Bavaria during the Middle Ages.

Many Bavarians made the long trip to escape poverty or persecution based on their religious beliefs. The chance for tenant farmers to own their own land was also a major drawing card.
