The name was first recorded in Antwerp, (Anvers.Fr) a fortified city in the province of Antwerp. It is Belgium's commercial center. In the 11th century Godfrey of Bouillon was Marquis of Antwerp. The province is divided into three districts, Antwerp, Malines and Turnhout. In their later history the surname became a power unto themselves and were elevated to the ranks of nobility as they grew into a most influential family.
