A descendant of this house, Lope de Esparza, who held the position of royal guard, moved with his wife and children to Catalonia where he rendered his services to the Catalan crown. He took part in the conquest of the city of Valencia with the Catalan Army under the command of King James I the Conqueror in the thirteenth century. In the battle of Boatella the king was wounded. Lope de Esparza insisted the King retreat from the battle field and took him to his tent where he took care of the king's wounds. He was rewarded for his gesture by James I with the town of Benafer, in the province of Castellon de la Plana (Valencia).
