Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Conrad Ewald, a mercenary who chose to remain in the United States after the American Revolution in the 1770's, Conrad Ewald, who settled in Texas in 1845 with his wife Elisa Riemenschneider, Franz Ewald, who arrived in New York in 1853 with his relatives Catharine and Franz, Wilhelmine Ewald, who came to New York in 1854 with her young relatives Hedwig and Anna, Carl Hinrich Ewaldt, who was naturalized in Scott County, Iowa in 1872.
