Etymology of Douay

What does the name Douay mean?

The story of the Douay family is rich with Scottish history. It begins in the ancient kingdom of Dalriada where Douay evolved as a name for some who lived in the Macildowie territory. The name Dowie is a shortened form of the place-name, and surname, Macildowie. In Gaelic, MacIldowie means "son of the black lad" 1

The surname Douay was first found in on the Isle of Iona.
