Etymology of Doren

What does the name Doren mean?

The surname Doren is a topographic name for someone who lived near a thorn bush or tree and is a cognate of the English word thorn. Another possible derivation for this name is from the Middle Low German word "torn," meaning 'tower'; in which case the name was for someone who lived near a tower. The Dutch prefix "Van" or "van" means 'one who lived at' or 'one who came from'.

Early Origins of the Doren family

The surname Doren was first found in the town of Doorn, Utrecht or Deurne, North Brabant. Doorn dates back to at least 885 to 896, when a document refers to the settlement called "Thorhem", dwelling of Thor, the God of Thunder.

Huis Doorn (English: House Doorn) is a manor house and national museum in the town of Doorn in the Netherlands was first built in the 13th century and was later, rebuilt in the 14th century, after it was destroyed. The property was purchased for 500,000 guilders in 1919 by Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor, as his residence-in-exile (1920-1941), following his abdication after World War I.
