St Giles Church is the oldest surviving building in the town and was built around 1225 AD. It is believed to stand on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The Old Manor House dates back to the late 17th-century origins and was held by Ferdinando Poulton, a Roman Catholic lawyer and Lord of the Manor; he was reputedly one of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators.
