Early Origins of the Deyen family

The surname Deyen was first found in Suffolk where Leuric Demere was listed at Bury St Edmunds c. 1095. Later in Staffordshire, we found Alan Demus at Trentham in 1250 and Richard le Demor, le Demur in 1201 and 1357. 1

The name literally means judge, from the "[Old English déma, démere, a judge]" 2 One source claims the name "as well as Damory, is said to have been derived from the Norman fief of De la Mer, near the mouth of the Seine." 3
